Octane 3 Features

Octane 2 license holders will be able to use the Octane 3 version of the plugin at no cost whilst Octane 3 is in the alpha and beta test stage.

Note: This will be an on-going list as new Octane 3 features are released by Otoy.

Minor Changes

Environment MediumsThe behavior of light inside a surface volume described by scatter, absorption, and transmission characteristics.

Added Medium and Medium Radius pins have been added to the to the Daylight and Texture Environment settings to allow you to create scatter effects in the environment. Try setting the Medium Radius to approx 20 in order to ray sun rays.

Baking Camera

Set the Settings tab Camera node type to “Baking Camera”. The baked texturemap will be for all mesh items in the Baking Camera->Baking Group ID. All geometry in the scene will have the same baking group ID (1), so you will need to only render the geometry you want to bake texturemaps for if using the Baking Camera.

OpenVDBDreamworks’ open-source C++ library housing the data structures and tools implementation for storing and manipulating volume data, like smoke and other amorphous materials. The purpose of OpenVDB is mostly to have an efficient way to store volumetric data in memory and on disk. It has evolved into a more general toolkit that also lets you accomplish other things, such as fracturing volumes, converting meshes to volumes and vice versa. However, it does not include a computational fluid dynamics solver, and therefore it cannot procedurally generate smoke or fire. OpenVDB is fully integrated as a library in OctaneRender. This format is more efficient than FBX when working with Octane specific data as it provides a flexible, application independent format. ORBX is a container format that includes all animation data, models, textures etc. that is needed to transfer an Octane scene from one application to another. proxy in order to render OpenVDB files.
